Residents of Sunset Park face a tangled web of rising rents\, a legacy of environmental racism and the loss of the industrial jobs that once sustained their community. When a global developer purchases Industry City – a massive industrial complex on the waterfront – and begins to transform it into an “innovation district\,” a battle erupts over the future of the neighborhood and of New York City itself. \nEmergent City is an observational civic epic. It sheds light on power and process\, illuminating systems and giving viewers a front row seat to the public and private spaces where the city is shaped. With extraordinary access\, it tracks an ensemble of participants including the local council member\, Industry City’s developers and community members with divergent stakes. The film explores the profound intersections of gentrification\, climate crisis and real estate development\, and asks how change might emerge from dialogue and collective action in a world where too many outcomes are constrained by money\, politics and business as usual.

SUMMARY:Race and Space: How Laws Create and Impact Asian Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Since its origins\, America has existed as a racially segregated country. For most of its history\, the law has been used to create and enforce this segregation. With the Reconstruction era’s 13th\, 14th\, and 15th Amendments\, or as historian Eric Foner calls it\, the “second founding\,” the U.S. abolished slavery\, granted citizenship\, and enshrined equality before the law\, at least in principle. And yet\, in fundamental ways\, we still live in a racially segregated country and city. Today\, many Asian New Yorkers shop\, eat\, worship\, reside\, or learn in spaces where they are surrounded by others who look like them. \nThis panel explores several distinct spaces where Asian New Yorkers gather and examines how laws and policies have defined\, developed\, policed\, and shaped these Asian spaces. Featured locations include massage parlors or spas\, New York City’s multiple Chinatowns\, takeout restaurants\, and specialized public high schools. Panelists will discuss how different areas of law such as education law\, criminal law\, immigration law\, and zoning laws impact these places.

The webcast will be held on September 24 at 8 pm EST and will include a question and answer period at the end of the one-hour broadcast. \nOur two speakers will be Gordon Chang\, the distinguished Stanford University history professor and Committee of 100 member\, who has written extensively about the topic\, including “Ghosts of Gold Mountain: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad (2019)”\, and Jindong Cai\, the Director of the U.S. China Music Institute at Bard\, who is staging an extraordinary oratorio production of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer\, Zhou Long’s “Men of Iron and the Golden Spike” at the Rose Theater\, Jazz at Lincoln Center on October 11. This large-scale symphonic oratorio honors the thousands of Chinese laborers who built the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. The performance will feature an 80-piece orchestra\, a 120-voice chorus\, and six vocal soloists.
