SUMMARY:Understanding Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent: Global Perspectives and Emerging Normative Frameworks
DESCRIPTION:Across the globe\, millions of people continue to face systemic discrimination\, exclusion\, and unequal opportunities based entirely on their inherited status\, descent\, or ancestral occupation. While deeply associated with the caste system in South Asia\, these rigid intergenerational hierarchies affect diverse global populations\, including the Roma in Europe\, Haratine in Africa\, Buraku in Japan\, Osu in Nigeria\, and Quilombola and Palenque communities in Latin America. To confront this global challenge\, this seminar brings together scholars\, students\, practitioners\, and policymakers to foster a comparative understanding of Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent (CDWD).

SUMMARY:Thinking Outside of the Clipboard: Creative Approaches to Voter Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Voting does not have to be boring. If you’re stuck with the image of voter engagement as 2 seated volunteers sitting behind a table with clipboards\, we’re here to expand your imagination when it comes to ways to engage communities around voting and civic engagement! Hear from our partners about ways they have moved from basic to bustling and made their communities excited about participating in our democracy. You’ll hear from Americans for the Arts about voter engagement initiatives ranging from flash mobs to voter line serenades and learn about ways you can partner with artists in your voter engagement work.  You’ll also hear from Warm Cookies of the Revolution about their initiatives like “The Huddle” during televised football games or “High Stakes” Texas Hold‘em to make you think twice about money in politics or “This Machine Has a Soul\,” an arts-based participatory budgeting process. Unfortunately real cookies don’t travel well via virtual webinar but we promise it’s worth coming anyway!

SUMMARY:2026 Korea on Screen: Peafowl (공작새)
DESCRIPTION:The Korean Cultural Center New York proudly presents Peafowl as part of its Korea on Screen series—a year-long screening series celebrating the depth and diversity of Korean cinema. Through feature films\, documentaries\, short films\, and independent productions\, the series aims to broaden access to and appreciation of Korean cinema in New York City. \nPeafowl follows Myung\, a transgender dancer living in Seoul\, as she is drawn back to her estranged hometown after the sudden death of her father—a master of traditional Korean folk percussion. To claim her inheritance\, she must perform a traditional memorial rite deeply rooted in gendered ritual\, forcing a reckoning between who she is and what her family and community expect her to be. Director Byun Sung-bin brings an electric\, kinetic energy to the film\, grounding its emotional intensity in the textures of folk ritual\, queer identity\, and the unfinished business of family.
