SUMMARY:Reframing Suicide as a Shared Social Responsibility in Korea
DESCRIPTION:The Korea Society is pleased to announce that the ninth annual Sherman Family Korea Emerging Scholar Lecture Awardee is Dr. Peter Na\, assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine.  In his lecture\, Reframing Suicide as a Shared Social Responsibility in Korea\, he casts suicide not as an individual failure or “extreme choice (극단적 선택)\,” but as a systemic and cultural crisis requiring a coordinated national response. Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist\, public health researcher\, and mental health advocate\, Dr. Na examines the scale and societal costs of suicide in Korea and analyzes key structural drivers such as academic and workplace pressures\, poverty and isolation among older adults\, and the pervasive stigma surrounding mental illness and treatment.

SUMMARY:We Anchor Ourselves in History: South Asian diasporic movements of study and struggle
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, young people have had an irrepressible desire to study histories of struggle—or the efforts that came before them to fight for a more liberatory and just world. What is it that young people gain when they anchor themselves in truthful histories\, histories that are often not taught\, or are erased\, by the state? What do such exercises give them\, and how does it shape their sense of self\, identity\, and belonging? How does it craft their political consciousness?  This workshop presents initial findings from a dissertation that begins with present day New York City youth\, and investigates their injury\, analysis\, and conclusions about South Asian Diasporic organizing in three moments of imperial boomerang: the 1970s and 80s United Kingdom\, the 1990s and early 2000s United States\, and the present US and UK. SUMMARY:Changing the Narrative: AAPIs in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:The Asian American Education Project is proud to host “Changing the Narrative: AAPIs in North Carolina\,” an in-person professional development program focused on the teaching of Asian American and Pacific Islander histories and experiences in the K-12 classroom. In this one-day institute\, we will explore some narratives that exist about Asian Americans in North Carolina (and in the U.S. South-at-large) and the role that K-12 education plays in changing\, breaking\, complicating\, or adding to those narratives. Through interactive workshops\, participants will acquire strategies and lessons for teaching about AAPI communities in the US South\, dive into specific AAPI histories in North Carolina\, and discuss how North Carolina’s HB835 Learning AAPI Contributions in Schools can impact their teaching.  \nParticipant Qualifications\nAll K-12 educators are welcome to apply. Priority will be given to teachers based in North Carolina. No prior knowledge of Asian American studies is needed.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance produced and created by the artist Yusuke Mori as part of the LEIMAY Constellation Series\, co-presented with LEIMAY within WEAVE. \nSpider’s Thread is a performance\, led by dancers Yusuke Mori and Alaisha Sharma\, based on Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s well-known short story. A simple tale based on Buddhist teachings\, in which a convict is given a slim passageway from eternal damnation. In this dance-theater piece\, the story unfolds through an interwoven tapestry of narration\, movement and music.
