SUMMARY:NY Comedy Festival Presents Margaret Cho: Choligarchy
DESCRIPTION:My new show CHOLIGARCHY is bringing me back to my roots as a political comedian. I’m so frustrated with the state of the union and I know the only weapon I have is humor. We are being taken over by the richest people in the world but the one thing they cannot afford is jokes at their expense. I want to fight fascism with everything I have. This will be my most blistering and brutally honest show yet! Let’s tear down racism\, homophobia and sexism with all that we have. We have to fight for what we have now\, because if we wait any longer\, it might be too late to save ourselves. \nComedian. Actor. Musician. Advocate. Entrepreneur. Five-time Grammy and Emmy nominee. Margaret Cho\, a jack of all trades\, master of many.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ Immigration: Contemporary Struggles Globally and in New York
DESCRIPTION:The LGBTQ Policy Center is pleased to present an urgent discussion—featuring leading policymakers and advocates—about the impact of recent immigration policies on global LGBTQ migration\, with a spotlight on New York. \nFor decades\, the United States has recognized the threat\, and reality\, of state violence against LGBTQ people as a legitimate reason to grant asylum. However\, recent policy changes at the federal level have called into question the country’s commitment to protecting the human rights of LGBTQ immigrants. For example\, earlier this year\, the Trump administration deported Andry Hernandez Romero\, a gay makeup artist who came to the United States seeking asylum\, to a maximum security prison in El Salvador. Recent increases in ICE presence at courthouses and on the streets has created an environment of fear that discourages LGBTQ immigrants from accessing the social services they need to survive. Human Rights Watch has documented worsening discrimination\, harassment\, and violence against LGBTQ people both at home and abroad.

SUMMARY:Fair Pricing Act 101 Community Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Fair Pricing Act (S705/A2140) is proposed state legislation designed to bring transparency and equity to hospital pricing. \nIts core mission: \n\n\nStandardize the cost of routine medical procedures. \n\n\nRequire hospitals to publicly justify any additional charges. \n\n\nWhy does this matter? Disparate and predatory pricing is a significant barrier to necessary\, affordable care\, directly leading to delayed diagnoses and poorer long-term health outcomes in our communities. For many—especially groups like AAPI New Yorkers—cost is the main hurdle to seeking routine preventative care. No family should have to choose between medical bills and basic needs like rent or groceries. \nJoin us to discuss how the Fair Pricing Act is a crucial step toward building an equitable and affordable healthcare landscape for all.

SUMMARY:Learning Without Borders: Immigrants Transforming Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively discussion on how immigrants are reshaping the landscape of higher education!\n\n\n\nImmigrants have long faced structural challenges when accessing and thriving within educational systems and academic spaces. These include linguistic barriers\, precarious legal status\, limited access to financial aid\, cultural exclusion\, and the emotional toll of navigating institutions not designed for their realities. \nUnder the current political climate\, many of these challenges have intensified due to shifts in immigration policies\, tightening of visa regulations\, and increasing social and economic precarity for immigrant communities. \nIn this conversation\, we will discuss both the historic and structural dimensions of these barriers and the new challenges emerging today. Bringing together scholars\, students\, and advocates\, we will explore how immigrant communities continue to transform academic spaces\, and what possibilities for solidarity\, policy change\, and institutional transformation might shape the future of higher education.

SUMMARY:At the Edge of Empire: A Family’s Reckoning with China
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) cordially invites you to a special conversation with Edward Wong\, diplomatic correspondent for The New York Times and author of At the Edge of Empire: A Family’s Reckoning with China. The son of Chinese immigrants in Washington\, D.C.\, Wong grew up among family secrets\, especially those surrounding his father Yook Kearn Wong\, who served in Mao’s People’s Liberation Army before making a perilous escape to Hong Kong in 1962. As Beijing bureau chief\, Wong retraced elements of that past while examining the forces behind a resurgent China: intensified nationalism under President Xi Jinping\, ethnic conflict in Xinjiang and Tibet\, and pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong. \nThis program will also highlight the history of southern Chinese migration to the United States\, especially from Taishan County in Guangdong\, and the enduring transnational ties among Chinese migrants. By connecting geopolitics with family memory and community networks\, the talk will show how cross-Pacific migration continues to shape Chinese American life today.

SUMMARY:Solo Plays - FULL CONTACT and X#*! YOU VERY MUCH\, MOM!
DESCRIPTION:Leviathan Lab’s WinterFest proudly presents a double feature of two new\, compelling solo performances and a staged reading of a new dark comedy: The National New Play Network NYC Rolling World Premiere of FULL CONTACT; a developmental workshop of X#*! YOU VERY MUCH\, MOM; and a one-night staged reading of BLOOD/SUCKER.  \nIn FULL CONTACT\, after a week alone in his apartment\, Filipino American Ariel Estrada* unravels under the weight of his memories: a violent cult\, a lost faith\, and the echo of his late father’s demands. YOU VERY MUCH\, MOM\, theatre meets TED Talk meets dark family secrets. With whimsy\, sardonic humor\, and heart\, Đavid Lee Huỳnh* shares how the effects of French colonialism shaped Vietnam\, rippled out\, and made it so #%@#ing hard for his mom to say “I love you.” Presented by Second Generation Productions in association with Leviathan Lab. \nWriter/actors Ariel Estrada and Đavid Lee Huỳnh will each perform their respective stories in TheaterLab’s intimate white box space—an evening of two\, hour-long solo works that challenge what it means to be Asian American now. \nCommunity partner tickets ($20) are available for 12/5 Vietnamese community night performance using the code: nguyennguyensituation

SUMMARY:Impossible Desires: New Directions in Queer Diaspora Studies
DESCRIPTION:The publication of Gayatri Gopinath’s Impossible Desires: Queer Diasporas and South Asian Public Cultures (Duke University Press) in 2005 heralded a new moment in transnational scholarship in gender and sexuality studies. The book theorized queer and feminist cultural practices in the context of South Asian diasporic migration\, and served as a precursor to subsequent scholarship in queer diaspora studies that has radically reshaped the fields of queer and feminist studies in the past two decades. \nWe mark the twentieth anniversary of Impossible Desires by showcasing the work of a new generation of queer diaspora scholars whose work spans South Asia\, the SWANA region\, South Africa\, and the Caribbean. Scholars Kareem Khubchandani\, Suzanne Persard\, Medjuline Shomali\, and Jordache Ellapen will reflect on their own groundbreaking work in light of Gopinath’s book; and artists Al-An deSouza\, Chitra Ganesh\, Shahzia Sikander\, and Felipe Baeza – all of whom have engaged in long-standing dialogues with Gopinath over the years—will reflect on the artist-critic relationship. The evening will conclude with a DJ set by Arshia Fatima Haq\, artist and founder of Discostan.

SUMMARY:Cameras\, Crosswalks\, and Change: Exploring the Policy and Design of Better Streets with Streetfilms
DESCRIPTION:The new Sam Schwartz Transportation Research Program at Roosevelt House is pleased to present a special screening of selections from Streetfilms\, an online documentary project and leading platform for educational films on sustainable transportation. How is Montreal innovating with bicycling infrastructure? How important was congestion pricing in allowing the city of London to rethink its streets?
