Her latest book\, Last Boat out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese who Fled Mao’s Revolution\, was one of NPR’s Best Books and a finalist for a 2020 PEN America prize. Helen’s first book\, Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American Peopk\, about the civil rights struggles of Asian Americans\, and it is still used as a foundational history text in colleges and high schools. She also wrote My Country Versus Me with nuclear physicist Wen Ho Lee\, who was falsely accused by the FBI of being a spy.  \nA selection of Helen Zia’s books will be available for sale following the discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Dalit Journeys for Dignity is a facilitated discussion about the radical\, field-shifting subfield of Dalit Studies within South Asian Studies. This event centers around the publication of this second volume\, the Dalit Studies Volume Two (April 2025\, SUNY Press and Permanent Black)\, using this occasion to reflect on the developments in this field since its formal inauguration with the Dalit Studies (Duke\, 2016) by Ramnarayan S. Rawat (Delaware) and Kusuma Satyanarayana (EFL-U\, Hyderabad) now close to a decade ago. It extends the discussion to a broader examination of the field’s affinities with other newer interdisciplinary subfields\, such as Critical Caste Studies\, Gender and Caste\, or more established ones\, like Black Studies.

DESCRIPTION:The Stolen Relations project is a tribally collaborative initiative to recover\, interpret\, and share with the public the long-hidden history of Native American enslavement. Developed over the past decade and formally launched in May 2025 (www.stolenrelations.org)\, the project brings together a growing database of individual records alongside contemporary Native perspectives\, artwork\, music\, and other resources for tribal and public use. \nJoin us for a presentation and discussion with two of the project’s originators – Brown University’s Linford D. Fisher\, Principal Investigator\, and Lorén M. Spears\, founding member of the Tribal Advisory Board. Together\, they will trace the history of Native enslavement and reflect on how the Stolen Relations project invites larger questions about decolonizing archives\, confronting the erasure of Native histories from our national narratives\, and reconnecting with this buried history.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at e-flux Screening Room on Tuesday\, October 21 at 7pm for the screening program Ancestral Computation\, followed by a discussion between artist Nouf Aljowaysir and curator Mashinka Firunts Hakopian. The program is co-presented with ArteEast. \nAncestral Computation assembles works that counter the epistemes of Western technoscience\, from across the SWANA region and its diasporic time-spaces. These works call forth ancestral intelligences\, inheriting forms of worldmaking surfaced from the lacunae of omissive datasets and archives of dispossession. They traverse algorithmic dream divination; develop tools for upending classificatory protocols; evade technologies of capture; and conjure precolonial deities through radio transmissions. They invoke alternate temporalities\, rejecting the consignment of non-Western technologies to the dustbins of media history.

SUMMARY:Disciples of the Pear Garden*: NYC Cantonese Opera Histories
DESCRIPTION:Cantonese opera has been part of New York’s story for more than 170 years. Beginning in the 1850s\, touring troupes performed in Chinatowns across the United States from San Francisco to Chicago\, New York\, and even Spokane (plus smaller cities in between). In 1853\, the 40-member Tong Hook Tong opera company appeared at New York’s Niblo’s Garden\, one of Manhattan’s grand theaters. By 1890\, Chinatown’s Doyers Street had its own dedicated opera house\, founded by cultural activist Wong Chin Foo. These performances helped build community through music\, theater\, and tradition that continues to resonate today. \nThis special evening brings that legacy to life: \n\nDr. Nancy Yunhwa Rao shares highlights from her acclaimed new book Inside Chinese Theater: Community and Artistry in 19th Century California and Beyond.\nCelebrated theater artist Ping Chong and his sister Betty Chong share stories of their family’s arrival in the 1930s as members of a Cantonese opera troupe from Canada and performing in New York.\nCantonese opera performer Mee Mee Chin shows vintage costumes from her collection and performs some classic opera songs.
