SUMMARY:CBH Talk | Rebuilding American Democracy: The Path to a Functioning Government
DESCRIPTION:According to legal scholar and former White House official K. Sabeel Rahman\, American democracy faces a crisis that goes beyond elections\, polarization\, and partisan division. In his urgent new book\, Remaking the State: A New Blueprint for American Democracy\, Rahman argues that the health of our democracy depends on rebuilding the institutions of government themselves.  \nTaking aim at both the top-down model of the traditional administrative state\, as well as efforts to dismantle government altogether\, Rahman centers his consideration on what it takes to make government genuinely responsive to the public it serves. Drawing on his experience as one of the Biden administration’s top regulatory officials\, he asks us to reconsider not simply how much government we want\, but what we want government to be. \nJoin us for a timely discussion about government power and capacity\, inequality\, public trust\, and what rebuilding the machinery of American democracy might look like. New York Times economics reporter Talmon Joseph Smith leads the conversation.

SUMMARY:Asian Americans and The Great Writ: Habeas Corpus Yesterday and Today
DESCRIPTION:The writ of habeas corpus achieved prominence in late 17th century England as a key protection against royal prerogative powers\, and early Americans adopted it as a bulwark against Executive Branch overreach. This program will examine the role that Asian and Asian American petitioners played in the evolution and development of the writ of habeas corpus in U.S. courts\, particularly in the immigration and wartime detention contexts. It will also explore the continuing significance of the writ of habeas corpus today.

SUMMARY:"Only You" in a Girl from Zanzibar: The 1980s\, Neoliberalism\, and the Soundtrack of Protest
DESCRIPTION:The 1980s: Thatcherism\, neoliberalism\, privatization\, and union strikes. If these are the British legacy of that period\, its soundtrack is synthpop. For this presentation\, R. Benedito Ferrão\, the 2026-2027 CUNY Thomas Tam Visiting Professor\, “listens” to a pivotal scene in Roger King’s continent-spanning novel A Girl from Zanzibar (2001)\, hearing in it Yazoo’s “Only You” (1982). It is the score to the fraught nature of infrastructural changes brought on by the Thatcher regime\, manifested in the dichotomy of luxury homes built in the wake of the privatization of government properties. This is precisely how King’s Goan-Arab protagonist\, Marcella D’Souza\, achieves her immigrant dreams\, only to have them dashed with the discovery that she is an undocumented migrant from a former colony. Employing an intermedial approach between literature and music\, Professor Ferrão also relies on the Flying Pickets’ cover of “Only You” (1983/84)\, an acapella version linked to political theatre and improvisational strategy around mining strikes. In thus employing a sonic history\, Professor Ferrão contends that when heard alongside King’s novel\, “Only You” lyrically and historically signals infrastructural change in the 1980s while striking a note of resistance. \nTalk will be followed by a reception.

SUMMARY:Migration\, Citizenship\, and the U.S. Constitution
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Supreme Court narrowly upheld birthright citizenship in June 2026\, and the invocations of competing versions of U\,S\, history in the Trump v Barbara opinion sparked questions about the origins of that bedrock constitutional guarantee. What was citizenship like before the 14th Amendment for politically disfavored groups\, and why is the bedrock guarantee of birthright citizenship in the Constitution? Professor Anna Law\, a scholar of U.S. immigration and constitutional law and history\, is the author of Migration and the Origins of American Citizenship\, a timely new book that addresses these questions. Professor Prudence Cumberbatch\, chair of Africana Studies and a scholar of African American studies\, race\, and gender\, will offer comments.

SUMMARY:King of the Yees: Lauren Yee\, Francis Jue and David Henry Hwang
DESCRIPTION:Join us in an intimate conversation with three important theatermakers on the New York premiere of Lauren Yee’s play\, King of the Yees\, at Signature Theatre (running from October 6 – November 15). Playwright and screenwriter Lauren Yee\, actor Francis Jue and playwright David Henry Hwang talk about sharing the notion of family in their work\, their poignant\, moving stories of their fathers\, and the art of portraying them on the stage. An “epic joyride across cultural\, national and familial borders”\, King of the Yees tells the story of Lauren’s father Larry Yee (played by Francis Jue)\, a driving force in San Francisco Chinatown. Francis Jue has also played David Henry Hwang’s father in his Tony-winning play\, Yellowface. Lauren\, Francis\, and David discuss Asian American families\, lineages and storytelling in the theater as part of this special conversation at Asia Society.
