DESCRIPTION:In honor of the Japanese Day of Remembrance on February 19\, Serica Storytellers presents an intimate virtual conversation on “By the Shore of Lake Michigan”\, the award-winning translation of a 1960 collection of Japanese tanka poetry written by Tomiko and Ryokuyō Matsumoto — a first-generation (Issei) Japanese American couple forcibly incarcerated at the Heart Mountain prison camp during World War II and later resettled in Chicago. Translated and edited by the poets’ granddaughter and a team of scholars\, this collection represents a rare first-generation point of view. Through the tanka form — one of the oldest styles of Japanese poetry — the Matsumotos document 17 years of upheaval\, displacement\, grief\, resilience\, and rebuilding in the shadow of incarceration. This Serica Storytellers event brings together the book’s editor\, translators\, and contributing scholar to discuss Japanese-language writing from WWII\, the cultural significance of tanka\, and the work of recovering erased histories for future generations.

Together\, we can have the narrative power to imagine and bring forth a just\, multiracial democracy where we all have what we need to ensure our families and neighbors thrive. \nOver the past 60 years\, there has been a coordinated\, well-resourced effort by people and organizations\, who desire to maintain power and wealth for a few\, to popularize a set of harmful narratives that foster fear and division\, limit democracy\, and institutionalize racial inequities. In recent years\, we have witnessed attacks on our bodies\, attacks on diversity\, equity\, and inclusion efforts in schools and workplaces\, and attacks on our human\, civil\, and political rights. But\, these attacks do not have to determine our fate; we can live in a society where we\, along with our neighbors and government institutions\, make collective policy decisions\, co-create programs to meet community needs\, and ensure public policies and programs are implemented effectively and fairly. \nTo make our vision of a just\, multiracial democracy a reality\, we must seed and spread new narratives that show what is possible when we join together to end systemic racism and create a better future for all. We do this\, together\, by reaching millions of different people\, over time\, across many voices\, and across a variety of mediums. \nThis is what we call “narrative change”.

Today\, most New Yorkers think of the agency primarily as steward of the city’s public parks\, while recreation represents barely 5 percent of its expense budget—and years of underinvestment have left the system struggling to realize its full potential\, with fewer programs than before the pandemic\, staffing shortages\, and aging rec centers\, field houses\, pools\, and athletic facilities in need of major upgrades and expansion to meet demand. With New Yorkers spending more time indoors and struggling with health challenges—from obesity to social isolation—it may be time to put the Rec back in Parks & Rec.

SUMMARY:Harnessing the Power of Graphic Novels in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Graphic novels (memoirs and nonfiction) and comic books are an integral tool in increasing literacy and engagement in the classroom. Through this workshop\, educators will learn the scholarship and research behind the benefits of using comics and graphic novels in the classroom while also gaining access to learning activities and materials to support this work. Participants will learn about the current research on literacy in social studies and how graphic novels improve literacy\, reading comprehension\, and engagement. The workshop ends with a walk-through of various activities and novels that educators can use in their classrooms. Participants will receive a workshop folder filled with classroom activities and lesson extensions at the end of the session. This workshop is ideal for middle school – high school social studies and ELA teachers. \nThis event is brought to you by Teach Asian American Stories and AAPI New Jersey.
