SUMMARY:Tagasaló o Nagsasalo? Precents and Consequences of Intergenerational Support in Later-Life Filipino Families
DESCRIPTION:Filipino families are often described through the lens of utang na loob (debt of gratitude) and reciprocal obligation\, but who actually ends up providing and receiving support as parents age — and why — remains an open empirical question. Is support concentrated in a single tagasaló — the family member who catches every financial and caregiving need? Or is it nagsasalo (feasting together) — shared and redistributed across siblings and generations? Against the backdrop of rising longevity\, longer years spent living with disease and disability\, and declining fertility shrinking the pool of sumasaló\, what happens across the life course when a sumasalo today becomes the sole tagasaló tomorrow? This talk draws on life course theory and social exchange theory to identify the precedents and consequences of both giving and receiving intergenerational support among older Filipinos.

SUMMARY:Performance - “Choreographies of Care” by Kim Ye
DESCRIPTION:The 30-minute movement-based performance combines choreography from the Asian tradition of park dancing with US military parade sequences\, Qigong\, and gestures taken from pregnancy\, childrearing\, and sex work. Performed by an intergenerational ensemble to a score that layers Chinese nursery rhymes\, traditional East Asian instrumentals\, in utero recordings\, and “Taps\,” the piece proposes caregiving as a form of national service that requires the sacrifice of feminized\, immigrant\, and Asian bodies.

SUMMARY:Archeology and the Making of Ifugao History
DESCRIPTION:Who has the authority to tell Ifugao history\, and what changes when communities take part in that work? This conversation draws from archaeology in Ifugao to examine how knowledge about the past is produced and shared. Research has challenged long-held claims about the age of the rice terraces and has shown how community knowledge can redirect archaeological interpretation. It has also changed how archaeology is practiced. Community members do not enter the process only after research questions have been set. Their knowledge can reshape how archaeologists understand the past. The discussion also considers what happens when archaeological findings return to the communities from which they came. Ifugao provides a case for thinking about archaeology as a shared practice\, one in which scholars and communities negotiate how the past is understood and how history is told.

SUMMARY:Asian American Studies Matters
DESCRIPTION:In its 250-year existence\, the United States has welcomed\, nurtured\, while also barred and deported Americans who hail from all parts of the world. The Asian American experience is at once unique and familiar. From the first migrants to these shores in the late 1500s\, to the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882\, to the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II\, to the banning and deporting of Asian migrants in the current day\, this complex history is often omitted from US education. This online event brings together Asian Americanists in conversation about the place of AAPI studies curriculum in current K-12 and college classrooms. How can we encourage teachers and schools (K-12 to college) to become more receptive to teaching AAPI histories and experiences?

SUMMARY:Vietnamese Boat People 2026 Story Slam
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a story only you can tell? Vietnamese Boat People is back at the Think!Chinatown Studio for their 7th Annual Story Slam—an evening of live storytelling\, community\, and connection. Starting as the Mỹ Việt Story Slam\, an online performance focusing on stories from the Vietnamese diaspora\, this collaboration with Think!Chinatown features in-person live performances welcoming storytellers from any culture. \nMaybe it’s the word that only exists in your native language\, the one you’ve never found a real translation for. Maybe it’s your name — shortened\, softened\, anglicized\, or swapped out entirely just to make a Tuesday easier — and you’re still not sure how you feel about that trade. \nThis year’s Story Slam theme is about living between two languages — the mistranslations\, the code-switching\, the words that don’t survive the crossing\, and get lost or found somewhere in between. It’s about the moment someone gets something wrong — your name\, your meaning\, your joke — and you let it slide\, or the moment you didn’t. It’s about the words\, names\, and phrases that somehow still trigger something in you\, no matter which language you’re standing in.

SUMMARY:Yiyun Li with Jennifer Egan: Music Against the Night
DESCRIPTION:Yiyun Li’s latest book is Music Against the Night. In Dublin\, as the 18th century nears its end\, a young virtuoso named John Field comes of age as his family nurtures visions of him becoming the next Mozart. His talent takes him to England\, France\, and Russia\, where he becomes a famous pianist and composes dreamy\, languorous melodies that enchant the night air. John calls them nocturnes\, but the prodigy who immortalizes them is Chopin. Oceans away in French India\, Adelaide Percheron has a startling rise of her own. Orphaned and raised by her grandmother\, Adelaide is driven by her secret love of music and a desire to see the world. She engineers her exodus\, escaping to Paris and later to Moscow\, as Napoleon’s army sets out to conquer the continent. As John and Adelaide each try to chart a path between talent and genius\, success and legacy\, profit and passion\, they must decide what\, and even who\, is worth sacrificing along the way. \nLi talks with Jennifer Egan about depicting two aspiring musicians in pursuit of success and bringing to life the sweep and dimension of the Romantic era.

SUMMARY:Environmental Crisis in Southeast Asia: Politics\, Misrule\, and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:This conference brings together scholars and practitioners to examine the politics of the environmental crisis across Southeast Asia—a region where socio-ecological ruptures are not aberrations but products of longstanding structures of extraction and governance failure. Panelists trace the roots of these crises and assess how extractive industries\, increasingly legitimized through the language of green transitions and climate finance\, reproduce entrenched patterns of dispossession and injustice. From nickel mining and biofuel expansion to sand dredging and flood aid corruption\, the panels situate contemporary crises within deeper histories of resource conflict and structural inequality. \nThe conference foregrounds questions of resistance and accountability: what are communities\, activists\, and civil society organizations doing to contest new forms of ecological crisis? And what political conditions are necessary to advance climate action while achieving social and environmental justice? Beyond critical analysis\, we seek insights into the strategies—legal\, political\, and grassroots—that have worked or might work to address Southeast Asia’s intertwined ecological and democratic crises.
