SUMMARY:History Walk: Asian Americans and the Downtown Arts Scene\, 1980–2000
DESCRIPTION:Many talented artists of Asian descent helped define the vibrant art scene in downtown New York in the last decades of the 20th century\, including some in China Institute Gallery’s current exhibition\, Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation. On World AIDS Day\, we will remember their contributions and those who lost their lives during the AIDS crisis\, by tracing their steps on the trendy Lower East Side and East Village. Artists highlighted in this walk may include Ching Ho Cheng\, Chuang Che\, David Diao\, Ming Fay\, Tehching Hsieh\, Ma Hao\, Anna Sui\, Tan Dun\, Tseng Kwong Chi\, Muna Tseng\, and Martin Wong. The sites to be visited include where they exhibited\, worked\, and hung out with peers. \nThe tour begins from the Lower East Side\, inside the Delancey St – Essex St subway station on the downtown F-Train platform at 1 PM. Run time is approximately 2 hours. The tour totals 3 miles of walking on uneven terrain on the Lower East Side\, East Village\, SoHo\, Tribeca\, and Chinatown\, making brief standing stops at each selected site. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. The tour will proceed rain or shine; in the event of extreme weather that requires a tour cancellation\, we will contact registered guests in advance.

SUMMARY:Impossible Desires: New Directions in Queer Diaspora Studies
DESCRIPTION:The publication of Gayatri Gopinath’s Impossible Desires: Queer Diasporas and South Asian Public Cultures (Duke University Press) in 2005 heralded a new moment in transnational scholarship in gender and sexuality studies. The book theorized queer and feminist cultural practices in the context of South Asian diasporic migration\, and served as a precursor to subsequent scholarship in queer diaspora studies that has radically reshaped the fields of queer and feminist studies in the past two decades. \nWe mark the twentieth anniversary of Impossible Desires by showcasing the work of a new generation of queer diaspora scholars whose work spans South Asia\, the SWANA region\, South Africa\, and the Caribbean. Scholars Kareem Khubchandani\, Suzanne Persard\, Medjuline Shomali\, and Jordache Ellapen will reflect on their own groundbreaking work in light of Gopinath’s book; and artists Al-An deSouza\, Chitra Ganesh\, Shahzia Sikander\, and Felipe Baeza – all of whom have engaged in long-standing dialogues with Gopinath over the years—will reflect on the artist-critic relationship. The evening will conclude with a DJ set by Arshia Fatima Haq\, artist and founder of Discostan.

Hess Scholar in Residence\, is the Frederick I. and Grace Stokes Professor of Law at NYU School of Law. Murray teaches constitutional law\, family law\, criminal law\, and reproductive rights and justice. She is a co-author (with Andrew Weissman) of The New York Times bestselling book The Trump Indictments: The Historic Charging Documents with Commentary. She is a legal analyst for MSNBC and served as a judicial clerk to Justice Sonia Sotomayor\, then a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. \nRussell M. Jeung\, the 2025–26 Robert L. Hess Scholar in Residence\, is professor of Asian American studies at San Francisco State University and co-founder of Stop AAIP Hate. He is author of Family Sacrifices: The Worldviews and Ethics of Chinese Americans; Moving Movers: Student Activism and the Emergence of Asian American Studies; At Home in Exile: Finding Jesus among My Ancestors and Refugee Neighbors; and Faithful Generations: Race and New Asian American Churches. He co-produced the documentary The Oak Park Story (2010)\, about a landmark housing lawsuit involving Cambodian and Latino tenants. He was named as one of the TIME‘s 100 Most Influential Persons in 2021.

DESCRIPTION:The new Sam Schwartz Transportation Research Program at Roosevelt House is pleased to present a special screening of selections from Streetfilms\, an online documentary project and leading platform for educational films on sustainable transportation. These “shorts” will feature Streetfilms’ signature “man on the ground” storytelling approach\, capturing how smart transportation design and policy in Paris\, Montreal\, London\, and beyond are creating more vibrant\, healthy\, and livable communities. \nFollowing the screening\, Sam Schwartz\, Chair and Founder of the Transportation Research Program\, will lead a discussion with director and founder of Streetfilms\, Clarence Eckerson Jr. They will explore which of the policies and infrastructure approaches portrayed in the films could be adapted for New York City\, as well as the opportunities and challenges involved in doing so. \nPlease join us as we consider questions such as: What is Paris doing to protect children walking\, and rolling\, to school? How is Montreal innovating with bicycling infrastructure? How important was congestion pricing in allowing the city of London to rethink its streets?

DESCRIPTION:Continuing MOCA’s LGBTQ AANHPI Program Series\, we are proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2025 to present Meet Us Where We’re At\, a program of six videos that forefront the experiences of drug users and harm reduction practices as they intersect with the ongoing HIV crisis. \nMeet Us Where We’re At features newly commissioned works by Kenneth Idongesit Usoro (Nigeria)\, Hoàng Thái Anh (Vietnam)\, Gustavo Vinagre & Vinicius Couto (Brazil/Portugal)\, Camilo Tapia Flores (Chile/Brazil)\, Camila Flores-Fernández (Peru/Germany)\, and José Luis Cortés (Puerto Rico). \nThe hour-long video program will premiere on December 1\, in observance of World AIDS Day/Day With(out) Art. Visual AIDS has collaborated with museums\, galleries\, universities\, and community organizations worldwide to host free public screenings. Based in New York City\, Visual AIDS is a non-profit organization that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Dr. Ji-Young Lee for an examination of the circumstances and methods of Chinese military intervention in the Korean Peninsula. Dr. Lee is Associate Professor of International Relations at American University’s School of International Service\, and author of China’s Hegemony: Four Hundred Years of East Asian Domination (2016) and an upcoming work under contract titled: The Great Power Next Door\, a historically informed analysis of when and how China has chosen to militarily intervene in the Korean Peninsula. Dr. Lee’s 2020 article\, “The Geopolitics of South Korea–China Relations\,” speaks to the contemporary dimension of the evolving relationship. The moderator of the program is policy director Jonathan Corrado.
