SUMMARY:Author Talk: Priya Parker: The Art of Fighting w/ America Ferrera
DESCRIPTION:A paradigm-shattering exploration of how we fight and how we build healthy conflict\, from the author of The Art of Gathering. We say we want community. Successful teams. High-performing colleagues and workplaces. Dynamic friend groups. Yet many of us don’t understand the crucial element we need to forge long-lasting communities in our lives: healthy conflict. \nIn The Art of Fighting\, Priya Parker explains that we can’t form and grow effective relationships without a fight. She rejects the idea that conflict is abnormal or that good groups don’t fight. All groups change and evolve; indeed\, it’s because people disagree that good groups flourish.

SUMMARY:Screening and Panel Discussion of Daughter of Shanghai
DESCRIPTION:This 1937 film stars Anna May Wong and Philip Ahn in a thriller about a woman in San Francisco Chinatown trying to avenge her father’s murder committed by an illegal-immigrant trafficking gang.  Wong and Ahn were both born in the United States in 1905 and American citizens by birth. The film was highly unusual in featuring two Asian American leads in an era of “yellowface” when White actors typically played headline Asian characters. In 2006\, the Library of Congress selected Daughter of Shanghai for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry.

SUMMARY:9/11: Reclaiming Ground Zero & Talkback with Josh Sabey\, Carolyn Lukensmeyer\, Dr. Sarah Sayeed\, and Michael Kimmelman
DESCRIPTION:After the smoke cleared\, there was a city to rebuild. BPL Presents is proud to welcome a screening and conversation around the new documentary\, 9/11: Reclaiming Ground Zero\, with director Josh Sabey\, Carolyn Lukensmeyer\, Dr. Sarah Sayeed\, and Michael Kimmelman. \nAfter the 9/11 attacks\, no one could agree what should be done with Ground Zero. And so New York decided to do one of the bravest—or stupidest—things in the history of city planning. They gathered 5\,000 representative New Yorkers and asked them to decide. People expected chaos\, yelling\, maybe even a fistfight. But what happened was democracy. This film tells the story of a city that responded to an attack on democracy by practicing democracy. It’s more than an exploration of the past\, it’s a blueprint for the future\, and an example of what’s possible. 2026. 68 m. J.B. Sabey. Rated NR.

SUMMARY:Royal Space Force: Wings of Honnêamise
DESCRIPTION:『王立宇宙軍 オネアミスの翼』 \nOritsu Uchugun: Oneamisu no Tsubasa \nNew 4K Restoration. The debut of animation studio Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and a seminal work of cel animation\, Hiroyuki Yamaga’s Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise launched a new generation of animators with its conceptual\, Promethean ambitions. Set on an alternate Earth in the kingdom of Honnêamise\, where space travel has not yet been achieved\, Bandai’s first foray into film production finds intrepid pilot Shirotsugh Lhadatt\, a member of the country’s oft-ridiculed space program\, making one last attempt to man a flight into space. Determined to reach the heavens despite corrupt political machinations and the looming shadow of war\, Lhadatt struggles to reconcile his mission with the ramifications of mankind’s progression to the stars. Featuring the talents of Hideaki Anno\, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto\, Mahiro Maeda and Hiromasa Ogura\, with music by Ryuichi Sakamoto\, Royal Space Force was envisioned as an art film\, with rich worldbuilding that countered the conventions of contemporaneous anime—an outsider work “to make anime fans reaffirm reality”. \nDir. Hiroyuki Yamaga\, 1987\, 119 min.\, DCP\, color\, in Japanese with English subtitles. With Leo Morimoto\, Mitsuki Yayoi\, Aya Murata.

SUMMARY:Staged Reading of The Butterfly Agreement
DESCRIPTION:This play is a contemporary reimagining of the classic Chinese folk romance The Butterfly Lovers. In a world where marriage comes with a price tag\, self-branding has become a means of survival\, and ideals are quietly shaped by capital\, the story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai takes root again in Shanghai and New York in 2026. \nTo escape a marriage arranged by the Ma family\, Zhu Yingtai assumes a false identity and leaves for the United States\, where she meets Liang Shanbo\, a struggling scholar kicked out of his lab and now working as an Uber driver. Both hiding behind carefully constructed personas and both measured by the world around them\, they enter into a marriage under “The Butterfly Agreement\,” trading a green card for research funding\, only to discover a feeling that cannot be calculated or measured.
