SUMMARY:Allegra at New York Live Arts
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer Benjamin Akio Kimitch conjures a fantasy Japanese American court dance where history presses against memory\, and memory against imagination. Drawing from family oral history and years of research in the United States and Japan\, ballet stages give way to temple grounds\, barren foothills\, army barracks\, and the stench of empty horse stables. Benjamin’s Allegra turns to Bugaku\, an ancient dance form whose roots stretch across Persia\, India\, China\, Korea\, and Japan. In postwar US-Japan relations\, performances of Bugaku inspired multiple collaborations with New York City Ballet\, including George Balanchine’s own Bugaku ballet. These histories converge through a Japanese American lens anchored by the aftermath of the camps in World War II. Benjamin and his ensemble\, Jessica Cook\, Lai Yi Ohlsen\, Glenn Potter-Takata\, and Nami Yamamoto\, bring these collective memories to life.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Recent Work by Muhsin al-Musawi
DESCRIPTION:How do we define plagiarism in literature? In this wide-ranging and innovative study\, Muhsin J. al-Musawi examines debates surrounding literary authenticity across Arabic and Islamic culture over seven centuries. Al-Musawi argues that intertextual borrowing was driven by personal desire alongside the competitive economy of the Abbasid Islamic Empire. Here\, accusations of plagiarism had wide-ranging consequences\, as competition among poets and writers grew fierce\, while philologists and critics served as public arbiters over controversies of alleged poetic thefts. Taking in an extensive remit of Arabic sources\, from Persian writers to the poets of Andalusia and Morocco\, al-Musawi extends his argument all the way to Ibrāhīm ᶜAbd al-Qādir al-Māzinī’s writing in Egypt and the Iraqi poet Nāzik al-Malā՚ikah’s work in the twentieth century to present ‘theft’ as a necessary condition of creative production in Arabic literature. As a result\, this study sheds light on a vast yet understudied aspect of the Arabic literary tradition\, while raising important questions surrounding the rising challenge of artificial intelligence in matters of academic integrity.

SUMMARY:How Is AI Changing the Practice of Investment Management?
DESCRIPTION:AI is narrowing the gap between professional and individual investors. Work that once took hours for an analyst can be done in minutes by an individual investor using an AI tool—summarizing an earnings call\, comparing a company’s latest 10-Q to prior filings\, or flagging changes in risk disclosures. But better tools don’t automatically produce better decisions. Will AI make it easier for investors to act on rumors\, flawed analysis\, or conclusions they don’t fully understand? If everyone is using the same tools\, does the edge simply shift to those with better data\, faster execution\, or the judgment to know when the AI is wrong? What should investors of every kind be considering? Larry Zicklin (BBA\, ’57) leads this timely discussion with the Zicklin School’s Lin Peng (left)\, Krell Chair Professor of Finance\, and Dexin Zhou (right)\, Associate Professor of Finance (Bert W. Wasserman Department of Economics and Finance). Introduction by Dean Bruce Weber and Q&A moderated by Associate Dean Gwendolyn Webb.

SUMMARY:Min Jin Lee with Aidan Flax-Clark: American Hagwon
DESCRIPTION:Min Jin Lee’s first novel since the bestselling Pachinko follows one family across decades and continents as they search in schools\, jobs\, churches\, and beyond for meaning and success. Once comfortably middle class in Korea\, John and Helen Koh and their three children—Bo\, DH\, and Mido—find their fortunes twisted and their lives upended\, first by a shocking betrayal by John’s oldest friend\, then by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Desperately striving to regain their footing\, they leave Seoul for Sydney and eventually settle in Southern California—where new vistas of opportunity open up for the children as their parents\, strangers in a strange land\, must adjust to a new life in which their experience and education mean little\, and they set their sights on whatever it takes to provide for their children’s futures. \nLee speaks with Aidan Flax-Clark\, the Director of LIVE from NYPL\, about crafting the Kohs as well as their friends\, relatives\, and their foes as they move in and out of each other’s lives\, always nursing the almost all-consuming faith that education will lead the next generation to success and security.

SUMMARY:Puppet Theater: Kojiki de Creation
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 15 at 7:30 pm—Followed by a Private Gathering for Artists and Members\nFriday\, October 16 at 7:30 pm—Preceded by a Pre-Performance Lecture\nSaturday\, October 17 at 7:30 pm—Preceded by a Pre-Performance Lecture\nSunday\, October 18 at 2:30 pm—Followed by an Artist Q&A \nFollowing the acclaim of 2022’s 9000 Paper Balloons\, New York-based puppeteer Maiko Kikuchi returns to Japan Society with Kojiki de Creation — a world premiere animating the gods\, islands\, critters and howling chaos of the Kojiki\, Japan’s oldest mythological chronicle. As a lone reader opens the book\, an ancient world erupts from its pages onto the stage: Kikuchi fashions fearsome Shinto gods from everyday objects and draws primordial creatures into being before your eyes. The result is a theatrical conjuring of the birth of Japan itself — assembled\, with characteristic whimsy\, from paper\, ink and imagination.

SUMMARY:The Bengali: An Evening of Film and the Power of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of film\, conversation\, and community at Turkevi Center (Turkish House) as we explore the stories we inherit\, the identities we carry\, and the unexpected connections that shape our world. \nIn The Bengali\, named one of Nonfics’ Top 20 Documentaries\, director Kavery Kaul takes an American woman to India to uncover her grandfather Shaik Mohamed Musa’s past. He was one of the early group of men who arrived in the late nineteenth century and married African-American women. Her unlikely quest triggers a boldly different encounter between East and West. A personal search becomes a deeper journey into culture\, memory\, and identity\, breaking barriers and building bridges\, revealing how histories travel\, and families form across unexpected places.
