SUMMARY:Segmented markets\, chokepoints\, and the limits of liberalisation: Rethinking the Philippine rice economy
DESCRIPTION:Despite being a nation of rice eaters\, the Philippines’ smallholder rice economy remains structurally fragile. This talk asks why a country with a long history of rice crises continues to struggle to sustain domestic production\, and advances two related claims. \nFirst\, importation has long served as the Philippine state’s principal instrument for managing rice crises\, but this recurrent reliance has displaced rather than resolved the challenge of sustaining domestic production reform. \nSecond\, this pattern cannot be understood by assuming a unified national rice market. The Philippine rice economy is better seen as a segmented field in which traders\, millers\, creditors\, and other intermediaries control chokepoints that shape price formation\, timing of sale\, and the distribution of value. Dominant policy approaches have framed rice competitiveness too narrowly: they identify low yields\, high production costs\, and high gross marketing margins\, but leave insufficient room for analysing the relations that systematically weaken farmers’ bargaining position in the market. Supporting rural well-being requires more than improved seeds or machines; it requires policy attention to mobility\, bargaining power\, reciprocity\, and the social infrastructures of hanapbuhay.

SUMMARY:The Illusion of Pastness: Hanbok on Screen
DESCRIPTION:Korean visual entertainment—including films\, K-dramas\, and K-pop music videos—is the result of highly sophisticated planning and production. These productions captivate a global audience by synthesizing music\, narrative\, and styling to deliver striking visual aesthetics and compelling emotional narratives. Costume is central to this production system\, and it plays an instrumental role in the aesthetic appeal and popularity of the media. For luxury brands\, K-drama serves as a powerful niche marketing platform\, while traditional dress (hanbok) is pivotal to nation branding. \nDress historian Dr. Minjee Kim will offer fresh insights into Korean period costume as a visual and narrative language closely aligned with the development of plot and storyline. She will demonstrate how period costumes produce the “illusion of pastness” rather than the past itself\, operating within a narrower range of sartorial possibilities\, thereby negotiating historical accuracy\, constructing stylized appearances\, and translating dynamically into contemporary aesthetics.

SUMMARY:Like A Wave We Break: An Inspiring Fireside Chat with Jane Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 19 for a powerful and intimate conversation with Jane Chen moderated by Karen Choi. In her best-selling memoir\, Like a Wave We Break\, Jane chronicles the rise of Embrace Global—the company she co-founded that has helped save over one million babies. When the organization nearly collapsed after a decade\, she was forced to confront how growing up amid domestic violence had shaped both her deep commitment to serving the most vulnerable—and the burnout and personal breakdown that followed.   \nTaking place during Mental Health Awareness Month and AANHPI Heritage Month\, the discussion will explore themes of mental health and cultural stigma often experienced within the AANHPI community\, resilience\, preventing burnout\, and what it means to rebuild after breaking. We hope you’ll join us for an honest and meaningful dialogue rooted in reflection\, healing\, and collective strength.

SUMMARY:Tuvergen Band - Mongolian Folk Fusion
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Tuvergen Band and the distinctive musical and cultural traditions of Mongolia\, with its deep connection to the natural world. Come and hear for yourself how the country’s traditional music reflects the sounds of wind\, water\, animals\, and the expansive grasslands of the steppe. At the heart of this tradition is throat singing (khöömii)\, a mesmerizing vocal technique in which a single voice produces multiple tones at once\, echoing the layered harmonies of the surrounding environment. \nTuvergen Band features Tamir Hargana\, an award-winning throat singer and multi-instrumentalist; Naizal Hargana\, a master of the morin khuur who was principal and leading soloist of the Inner Mongolian Youth Choir’s Morin Khuur Ensemble and is known for bridging Mongolian and Western styles; and Brent Roman\, an ethnomusicologist and former Cirque du Soleil performer whose global drum kit and didgeridoo add rich texture to the group’s “modern nomadic music”. \nThroughout the program\, audiences will have the chance to try basic vocal techniques and rhythm exercises. Flushing Town Hall teaching artist Ling Tang will also join the band\, improvising with their music while demonstrating essential Inner Mongolian dance movements such as horse-riding steps and the use of unique props like chopsticks and wine cups. Together\, they will lead everyone in a lively grassland-inspired music and dance finale\, a joyful dance party. This event was originally offered as part of FTH’s 2026 Lunar New Year programming.

SUMMARY:Adoptees\, Asian Diaspora\, and the Trauma That Hides in Plain Sight
DESCRIPTION:Adoptees\, Asian Diaspora\, and the Trauma That Hides in Plain Sight with Kellan\, Kai Ming Holistics (IICT). \nMany adoptees and those in the Asian diaspora carry forms of trauma that don’t always look like trauma — showing up instead as perfectionism\, people-pleasing\, or the pressure to succeed and belong. Beneath this often lies a deeper story of early separation\, cultural disconnection\, and intergenerational survival. \nIn this talk\, Kellan weaves personal experience alongside somatic insight and experiential practice to explore how these layered experiences shape the nervous system\, identity\, and sense of self. With compassion and honesty\, they offer a space to better understand the overlooked body’s role in trauma — and a pathway toward moving beyond survival patterns into greater authenticity\, self acceptance\, and true belonging. \nKellan is a queer\, neurodivergent\, transracial adoptee from China. They work integratively with adoptees and queer clients to address deep-rooted trauma beyond the reach of traditional talk therapy\, through their practice\, Kai Ming Holistics (IICT).

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Crouching Dub\, Hidden Riddim
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Carnegie Hall’s United in Sound: America at 250\, MOCA is excited to present a series of music programs featuring composers\, musicians\, and performers. Through this series\, artists use music as a storytelling medium to share their personal journeys\, creative inspirations\, and cultural influences. \nAn hour-long live cinematic and musical performance by Ben “saxofshaolin” Chin pairs martial arts films with a live soundtrack of Asian-influenced hip-hop and reggae. Martial arts films and Black diasporic music have long served as entry points into Asian and Black cultures. The program reimagines these familiar cultural forms while confronting the stereotypes that have long shaped their reception. This performance highlights the deep-rooted connections between Black and Asian diasporas while imagining new models for collaboration\, solidarity\, and cultural empowerment.
