SUMMARY:Changing Cultures: Zhen Guo\, A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The Mishkin Gallery at Baruch College is proud to present Changing Cultures: Zhen Guo\, A Retrospective\, the first major New York survey of artist Zhen Guo (b. 1955\, Shandong Province\, China). \nThe works on display span nearly sixty years\, from Zhen Guo’s first embroidery (Chairman Mao\, 1966) to her large-scale papier-mâché and sewn fabric breast sculptures and handmade tufted tapestries of 2012-2025. The show explores an artist’s journey from China to New York; themes include an immigrant’s identity\, motherhood\, and the violence embedded in patriarchal cultures. Guo’s large-scale “muted landscape” paintings protest environmental injustice. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated brochure with a new essay on Guo by curator Gail Levin. \nZhen Guo Video Works\, 2011-2022 \nThursday\, May 7\, 2026 | 5:30PM to 6:30PM\n \nA special 50-minute program screening original video works consisting of: \n\n\nZhen Guo\, Timeline of Movement\, 2011 (5:44) –  In her debut video art\, Guo contrasts Western and Asian approaches to health through tranquil T’ai Chi and vigorous group exercise\, illustrating their distinct yet engaging qualities.\nCleansing Moon\, 2018 (7:24) –  Gentle exploration of women’s renewal connects life\, femininity\, and the cosmos through the refreshing imagery of water. Accompanied by Guo’s poem\, it contemplates the cleansing of emotional burdens. \nMuted Landscapes\, 2022 (7:36) –  In this series\, Guo reflects on the intimate connection between humanity and the Earth\, emphasizing the overlooked significance of both women and nature.\nZhen Guo\, My Heart is Red\, 2022 (24:22) – Directed by Mia Chen for their final project at NYU Film School\, this short documentary follows Zhen Guo’s art practice\, working in her studio\, art openings\, and daily life through interviews with friends and family\, highlighting Guo’s interest in art\, the city\, and martial arts.\n\nWomen Artists\, Curators\, and Activists: A Conversation\nThursday\, May 21\, 2026\, 5:30PM to 6:30 PM \n\n\nModerator: Maika Pollack \nSpeakers: Gail Levin\, Zhen Guo\, Lori Horowitz\, Susan Grabel & Christina Schlesinger    \n\nClosing Event\nThursday\, June 11\, 2026\, 4PM to 6PM

SUMMARY:Dance - Here NOW So Long
DESCRIPTION:Here NOW So Long is utterly compelling multimedia dance theater work marked by remarkable versatility and choreographic virtuosity of Young Soon Kim. Here NOW So Long explores the turbulence of human emotion through 12 vivid scenes\, weaving together panoramic video imagery\, a live performance of an original score of guitars and electronics\, and the fluid\, dramatic movement of WHITE WAVE’s stunning dancers. The work extends and breaks the boundaries of contemporary dance with themes of love\, longing\, and inner conflict. \nThe production continues WHITE WAVE’s longstanding collaboration with a team of singularly innovative artists: an original score by Marco Cappelli\, visuals by filmmaker Hao Bai\, and dramaturgy by James Leverett\, former Yale professor. Artistic Director Young Soon Kim creates a movement language that reveres tradition while embracing innovation\, reaching into the inner landscapes of imagination\, passion\, and spirit to generate new expressions of contemporary dance.

SUMMARY:Heart on Fire\, Brain on Ice: Philippine Nonfiction since 2000
DESCRIPTION:Direct and political in their aims\, these documentaries\, features and shorts mostly unreleased and unseen in the United States\, take a clear-eyed view of the Philippines’ most exploited—landless peasant farmers\, urban poor displaced by development\, generations of indigenous families affected by toxic waste left behind by U.S. military bases—as well as those among them who are agitated to resist. The filmmakers are often intimately if not directly affected by the repression they capture\, and the films are made by and with activists who have integrated with the communities they follow on the ground. Occasionally surreal\, sometimes absurd\, these films maintain a firm grip on the visceral reality that binds their struggles together.

SUMMARY:Make It 10 Cents! - Community Panel
DESCRIPTION:Canners are some of the city’s most essential environmental workers – almost single-handedly driving the success of New York’s most effective recycling program. It’s time to give them a raise. The\nBigger Better Bottle Bill is pending legislation that would double the redemption rate from 5 to 10 cents and expand the types of cans and bottles eligible for return. \nLocal experts discuss why passing this bill matters — and what’s at stake. \nPanel is part of artist Siyan Wong’s exhibition “Make It 10 Cents” on view at Welcome to Chinatown\, 115 Bowery\, until May 19\, 2026

SUMMARY:Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:The incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII is the most horrific violation of the U.S. Constitution against APIDAs. The incarceration violated almost all of the amendments in the Bill of Rights\, as well as a few other Amendments. Almost the entire population of innocent Japanese Americans was incarcerated for over three years simply due to their heritage and ancestry. This workshop shows activities for students to learn how to analyze the Constitution through the lens of historic events\, such as the wartime incarceration.

SUMMARY:MOCA x USA Fencing On the Strip: Chinese Americans in Fencing
DESCRIPTION:For more than three decades\, fencing has quietly become one of the most prominent yet undocumented sports within Chinese American communities across the United States. From Flushing to Arcadia\, Fort Lee to Northern Virginia\, generations of Chinese American families have turned to the sport\, building clubs\, shaping competitive pathways\, and contributing to Team USA at the highest levels of international competition. Yet this remarkable cultural phenomenon remains largely absent from the historical record. \nIn celebration of AANHPI Heritage Month\, the Museum of Chinese in America and USA Fencing come together to spotlight this untold story through a dynamic evening of conversation and live demonstration. This event brings together leading Chinese American Olympians Alexander Massialas and Maia Chamberlain\, with award-winning journalist Richard Lui serving as moderator\, alongside renowned coach Andy Ma\, to explore the intersections of sport\, identity\, and belonging. \nThrough personal reflections and demonstrations\, the program explores how fencing has served as both a competitive pursuit and a cultural touchpoint for many Chinese American families. The conversation also considers what it means to choose belonging through sport\, and how discipline\, community\, and representation shape identity across generations. With Los Angeles 2028 on the horizon and fencing gaining greater visibility on the global stage\, this program offers a timely opportunity to begin capturing a living history as it unfolds.

SUMMARY:Protecting Your Mental Health While Doing Voter Engagement
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs mental health awareness has grown\, access to care and meaningful influence over the systems that shape it have not kept pace. Younger generations in particular are experiencing higher rates of anxiety and depression while also facing barriers to both care and civic participation. This webinar brings together leaders from the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Democracy Security Project alongside voter engagement experts to explore how structural challenges impact both mental health outcomes and civic voice\, often leaving the most affected communities underrepresented in critical decisions. \nThe session will also address the emotional toll of voter engagement work and offer practical strategies to help organizers and advocates protect their well being while sustaining their impact. Participants will gain insight into how civic participation can strengthen connection and agency\, and why ensuring people have both a voice and the capacity to use it is essential to building healthier\, more responsive systems.

It also celebrates the 11th anniversary of the Kim Koo Professional Series at The Korea Society.
