SUMMARY:Education Workshop Webinar - Immigration
DESCRIPTION:APIDAs were once excluded from entering the U.S. The Civil Rights Movement spearheaded by Black Americans led to the revision of discriminatory laws including immigration laws—leading to the passage of the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965. Today\, APIDAs are the fastest growing population in the U.S. This workshop shows activities for students to examine the cause and effect of various events and policies in U.S. history. This workshop also shows how Black American and APIDA histories are interconnected. Students will learn about cross-cultural solidarity. \nThis workshop is free for educators and will take place virtually. It will be facilitated by Laura Ouk.

SUMMARY:Ria Sim\, Author of “Dear New York\, I Love You”
DESCRIPTION:Ria Sim\, the creator of the popular Instagram account @coffeecakescafe\, might be New York City’s biggest fan. She herself describes New York City as her soulmate; she sees the best in the city and is moved by the simplicity of the buildings against the sky\, a single flower on a not-so-clean sidewalk\, and the ever-rotating\, meticulously curated decorations adorned on a brownstone in the West Village. \n“Dear New York\, I Love You: An Artist’s Celebration of the City” is packed with 120 colorful sketches that remind even the most jaded New Yorkers to notice the city’s simple beauties. It’s a colorful celebration\, a love letter\, and a beautiful art book all in one.

SUMMARY:Elaine Hsieh Chou’s "Where Are You Really From"
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s Where Are You Really From\, featuring Delia Cai! \nA mail order bride from Taiwan is packed up in a cardboard box and sent via express shipping to California\, where her much older husband awaits her. Two teenage girls meticulously plan how to kill and cook their downstairs neighbor. An American au pair moves to Paris to find herself\, only to find her actual French doppelgänger. A father reunites with his estranged daughter in unusual circumstances: as a background actor on the set of her film. A writer’s affair with a married artist tests the line between fact and fiction\, self-victimization and the victimization of others. \nIn these six singular stories and a novella that pivot from the terrible to the beautiful to the surreal\, Elaine Hsieh Chou confronts the slipperiness of truth in storytelling.

SUMMARY:Film - Conflagration
DESCRIPTION:Imported 35mm Print. Known as Ichikawa’s favorite of his own films\, Conflagration is the pinnacle of the many acclaimed literary adaptations he and his wife Natto Wada worked on together. Based on Yukio Mishima’s novel The Temple of the Golden Pavilion\, the film involves the spiritual and psychological breakdown of an introverted\, troubled youth named Goichi (Raizo Ichikawa)\, whose desire for pure beauty leads him to Kyoto’s Shukaku temple\, where he becomes an apprentice to the priest. Haunted by the trauma of his father’s death\, Goichi is unable to reconcile the sacred beauty of the temple with postwar reality\, and his absolutist ideals become increasingly distorted until they lead to destruction. Ichikawa’s stark\, poignant film is unforgettably rendered in stunning black and white by cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa. \nDir. Kon Ichikawa\, 1958\, 99 min.\, 35mm\, b/w\, in Japanese with English subtitles. With Raizo Ichikawa\, Tatsuya Nakadai\, Ganjiro Nakamura.
