SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening - The Big Dipper Formation: Fu Xiaodong’s Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:The Chu-Griffis Asian Art Collection at Connecticut College presents The Big Dipper Formation: Fu Xiaodong’s Cosmos\, the first solo North American exhibition by prominent contemporary Chinese artist and curator Fu Xiaodong (付晓东). Curated by Yibing Huang\, the exhibition runs from October 28\, 2026\, through February 1\, 2027\, in the Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room at Charles E. Shain Library. Drawing on traditional Chinese cosmology and eight years of interdisciplinary research with scientific laboratories\, Fu’s major ink works (2020–2026) blend art\, science\, philosophy\, and geography into an interconnected field of discovery. \nRather than viewing isolated objects\, visitors enter a spatial model of relational thinking where landscape maps the body\, astronomy intersects with gender\, and scientific imagery illuminates ancient cosmologies. By allowing distinct knowledge systems to encounter and challenge one another\, the exhibition invites viewers to question how we diagram order onto our universe and whether the cosmos is ultimately external or inscribed upon ourselves. \nExhibition Opening\nThe opening program takes place Wednesday\, October 28\, from 4:15 to 6:00 p.m. in the Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room. The event features an artist talk by Fu Xiaodong\, a panel discussion\, an audience Q&A\, a guided tour\, and a light reception. The exhibition and all related events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Every Fourteen Minutes: Architecture\, Urbanization\, and Memory Politics in Postwar North Korea
DESCRIPTION:The birth of North Korea after the Korean War—centered on state authority and work culture—was distinctly represented by architecture. Architecture was divided into two interconnected types: monumental structures symbolizing the utopian vision of the state and vernacular structures instrumental to the regime of production. Architecture was also part of North Korea’s urbanization efforts through efficiency\, prefabrication\, and speed. “One apartment every fourteen minutes” was the motto born on the construction sites of Pyongyang. The memory of this postwar urbanization\, which involved an immense level of international cooperation\, began to fade in the 1970s. Yet this great built environment still stands today. Dr. Cheehyung Harrison Kim will discuss this postwar boom and drive toward construction in this lecture.

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Home Front with Sean Kim
DESCRIPTION:As the Korean war (1950–1953) drew to a close and South Korea began to rebuild\, American GI Roger Marshutz (1929–2007) was stationed in Pusan to photograph U.S. reconstruction efforts. In his spare time\, Marshutz also wandered the streets\, documenting the daily life of Korean civilians. The Forgotten Home Front: Roger Marshutz’s Photographs of Pusan\, South Korea\, 1952–1954 offers both an official and unofficial look at U.S.-South Korean relations\, as well as a portrait of a country in the midst of enormous political\, economic\, and cultural transformation. \nBased on the new book\, historian Sean Kim will discuss the crucial role of Pusan during the war and the major political\, socioeconomic\, and cultural transformations that followed in South Korea. \n

SUMMARY:Migration\, Citizenship\, and the U.S. Constitution
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Supreme Court narrowly upheld birthright citizenship in June 2026\, and the invocations of competing versions of U\,S\, history in the Trump v Barbara opinion sparked questions about the origins of that bedrock constitutional guarantee. What was citizenship like before the 14th Amendment for politically disfavored groups\, and why is the bedrock guarantee of birthright citizenship in the Constitution? Professor Anna Law\, a scholar of U.S. immigration and constitutional law and history\, is the author of Migration and the Origins of American Citizenship\, a timely new book that addresses these questions. Professor Prudence Cumberbatch\, chair of Africana Studies and a scholar of African American studies\, race\, and gender\, will offer comments.
