SUMMARY:The Bengali: An Evening of Film and the Power of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of film\, conversation\, and community at Turkevi Center (Turkish House) as we explore the stories we inherit\, the identities we carry\, and the unexpected connections that shape our world. \nIn The Bengali\, named one of Nonfics’ Top 20 Documentaries\, director Kavery Kaul takes an American woman to India to uncover her grandfather Shaik Mohamed Musa’s past. He was one of the early group of men who arrived in the late nineteenth century and married African-American women. Her unlikely quest triggers a boldly different encounter between East and West. A personal search becomes a deeper journey into culture\, memory\, and identity\, breaking barriers and building bridges\, revealing how histories travel\, and families form across unexpected places.

SUMMARY:Tagasaló o Nagsasalo? Precents and Consequences of Intergenerational Support in Later-Life Filipino Families
DESCRIPTION:Filipino families are often described through the lens of utang na loob (debt of gratitude) and reciprocal obligation\, but who actually ends up providing and receiving support as parents age — and why — remains an open empirical question. Is support concentrated in a single tagasaló — the family member who catches every financial and caregiving need? Or is it nagsasalo (feasting together) — shared and redistributed across siblings and generations? Against the backdrop of rising longevity\, longer years spent living with disease and disability\, and declining fertility shrinking the pool of sumasaló\, what happens across the life course when a sumasalo today becomes the sole tagasaló tomorrow? This talk draws on life course theory and social exchange theory to identify the precedents and consequences of both giving and receiving intergenerational support among older Filipinos.

SUMMARY:Performance - “Choreographies of Care” by Kim Ye
DESCRIPTION:The 30-minute movement-based performance combines choreography from the Asian tradition of park dancing with US military parade sequences\, Qigong\, and gestures taken from pregnancy\, childrearing\, and sex work. Performed by an intergenerational ensemble to a score that layers Chinese nursery rhymes\, traditional East Asian instrumentals\, in utero recordings\, and “Taps\,” the piece proposes caregiving as a form of national service that requires the sacrifice of feminized\, immigrant\, and Asian bodies.

SUMMARY:Archeology and the Making of Ifugao History
DESCRIPTION:Who has the authority to tell Ifugao history\, and what changes when communities take part in that work? This conversation draws from archaeology in Ifugao to examine how knowledge about the past is produced and shared. Research has challenged long-held claims about the age of the rice terraces and has shown how community knowledge can redirect archaeological interpretation. It has also changed how archaeology is practiced. Community members do not enter the process only after research questions have been set. Their knowledge can reshape how archaeologists understand the past. The discussion also considers what happens when archaeological findings return to the communities from which they came. Ifugao provides a case for thinking about archaeology as a shared practice\, one in which scholars and communities negotiate how the past is understood and how history is told.

DESCRIPTION:Registration was step one. Now let’s get voters informed\, prepared\, and to the polls. \nA Two-Part Webinar Series \nNational Voter Registration Day on September 15th was only the beginning. Once voters are registered\, the next challenge is making sure they have the information\, confidence\, and plan they need to actually participate. It’s Time to Get #VoteReady is a two-part webinar series designed to help nonprofits and community organizations guide voters from registration all the way to the ballot box. \nPart 1: Voter Education — October 6 focuses on turning registered voters into informed and confident voters. The session will emphasize the role nonprofits play as trusted messengers and provide practical\, easy-to-share resources organizations can use in their outreach. \nPart 2: GOTV — October 20 shifts from information to action. With Election Day approaching\, organizations will learn how to build an effective\, nonpartisan Get Out the Vote strategy that motivates people to follow through on their voting plans. We’ll cover timely reminders\, relational outreach\, volunteer engagement\, digital and in-person tactics\, early voting promotion\, overcoming common barriers\, and creating a sense of momentum around participation. \n

SUMMARY:NYC School Integration Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of dialogue about how to advance school integration in New York City. \n\n\n\n\nNew York City schools remain among the most segregated in the United States. For years\, community leaders\, students\, educators\, and city-commissioned working groups have put forward detailed recommendations to address inequality—yet systemic changes have not come. \nSparked by Nikole Hannah-Jones’ recent New York Times Magazine essay on her family’s decade of experience navigating the school system\, segregation and inequality are back in the public conversation. This event is a chance to have the conversation together in the same room. \nJoin The Bell and New York Appleseed for a frank\, urgent town hall bringing students\, parents\, educators\, and advocates together with Nikole Hannah-Jones and NYC Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels. Together\, we will discuss what integration actually looks like on the ground\, the policy choices that have inhibited progress\, and the swift actions required to deliver equity for all NYC students.

SUMMARY:Yiyun Li with Jennifer Egan: Music Against the Night
DESCRIPTION:Yiyun Li’s latest book is Music Against the Night. In Dublin\, as the 18th century nears its end\, a young virtuoso named John Field comes of age as his family nurtures visions of him becoming the next Mozart. His talent takes him to England\, France\, and Russia\, where he becomes a famous pianist and composes dreamy\, languorous melodies that enchant the night air. John calls them nocturnes\, but the prodigy who immortalizes them is Chopin. Oceans away in French India\, Adelaide Percheron has a startling rise of her own. Orphaned and raised by her grandmother\, Adelaide is driven by her secret love of music and a desire to see the world. She engineers her exodus\, escaping to Paris and later to Moscow\, as Napoleon’s army sets out to conquer the continent. As John and Adelaide each try to chart a path between talent and genius\, success and legacy\, profit and passion\, they must decide what\, and even who\, is worth sacrificing along the way. \nLi talks with Jennifer Egan about depicting two aspiring musicians in pursuit of success and bringing to life the sweep and dimension of the Romantic era.
