SUMMARY:Chinatown ’75 Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:CHINATOWN ‘75 is an interactive walking tour that tells the story of the police brutality case that rocked Chinatown and the protest movement that arose in its wake. In May of 1975\, 25\,000 protesters marched from Chinatown to City Hall to demand justice for the beating of Peter Yew. \nBased on archival research and oral histories with march participants\, CHINATOWN ‘75 traces the route of the original Peter Yew protest march to paint an in-depth portrait of a transformative moment in Chinatown’s history. We’ll explore how the interactions between radical social movements\, community organizations\, and the NYPD shaped the ensuing demonstrations\, and how the iconic photographs of the march came to symbolize a generation of Asian American activism. \nImportant: The meeting location is the south side of Canal Street and Elizabeth Street. The ending location is Foley Square. Tour runs rain or shine. \nDate and Time: 8/15 at 2:00 PM\, 8/16 at 11:00 AM\nTIckets: $28.52 Student/Senior\, $33.85 General \nTours will be led by Dr. Michael Menor Salgarolo\, a New York City-based historian\, walking tour guide\, retired stand-up comedian\, and founder of UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours. He holds a PhD in History from NYU and is now an Assistant Professor of History at Bard College. \nThis walk is presented by UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours and Think!Chinatown\, as part of the 2026 Chinatown Storytelling Festival. \nUNASSIMILATED is a walking tour company that crafts unique narrative experiences to tell a people’s history of Asian America. The paperback is $5 off for book club attendees! \nAbout the Book \nIn pre-Communist China\, Fae Myenne Ng’s father memorized a book of lies and gained entry to the United States as a stranger’s son\, evading the Exclusion Act\, an immigration law which he believed was meant to extinguish the Chinese American family. During the McCarthy era\, he entered the Confession Program in a failed attempt to salvage his marriage only to have his citizenship revoked to resident alien. Exclusion and Confession\, America’s two slamming doors. As Ng’s father said\, “America didn’t have to kill any Chinese\, the Exclusion Act ensured none would be born.” \nNg was her parents’ precocious first born\, the translator\, the bossy eldest sister. A child raised by a seafaring father and a seamstress mother\, by San Francisco’s Chinatown and its legendary Orphan Bachelors — men without wives or children\, Exclusion’s living legacy. She and her siblings were their stand-in descendants\, Ng’s family grocery store their haven. \nEach Orphan Bachelor bequeathed the children their true American inheritance. Ng absorbed their suspicious\, lonely\, barren nature; she found storytelling and chosen children in the form of her students. Exclusion’s legacy followed her from the back alleys of Chinatown in the 60s\, to Manhattan in the 80s\, to the high desert of California in the 90s\, until her return home in the 2000s when the untimely deaths of her youngest brother and her father devastated the family. A a child\, Ng believed her father’s lies; as an adult\, she returned to her childhood home to write his truth.Orphan Bachelors weaves together the history of one family\, lucky to exist and nevertheless doomed; an elegy for brothers estranged and for elders lost; and insights into writing between languages and teaching between generations. It also features Cantonese profanity\, snakes that cure fear and opium that conquers sorrow\, and a seemingly immortal creep of tortoises. In this powerful remembrance\, Fae Myenne Ng gives voice to her valiant ancestors\, her bold and ruthless Orphan Bachelors\, and her own inner self\, howling in Cantonese\, impossible to translate but determined to be heard.

This year’s program includes a trio of R&B and hip-hop acts: 9m88 (pronounced “Jo-m-Baba”)\, a jazzy singer-songwriter with strong R&B\, neo-soul\, and hip-hop influences; ØZI\, a singer-songwriter and rapper known for blending urban American styles with Mandopop; and YELLOW 黃宣\, the fashion-forward avant pop artist with a flair for the dramatic. You’re likely to hear some of their collaborations\, such as ØZI and 9m88’s song “Black Out\,” or the 9m88 and YELLOW (黃宣) single “怪天氣Strange Weather.” They’re joined by Chance Emerson\, a relative of Ralph Waldo Emerson born in Taiwan to a Taiwanese mother and American father and a singer-songwriter who explores the human condition with humor and empathy; Mong Tong\, Taiwanese brothers who channel Southeast Asian mythology and folklore through the hypnotic rhythms and ethereal melodies of ‘60s and ‘70s psychedelic music; and a DJ set from Chinatown Records\, the archival project from DJ and historian yiuyiu 瑶瑶 that stewards more than 30 distinct vinyl\, CD\, and cassette collections inherited from her family & neighbors\, spanning nearly 100 years of Chinese music and beyond.
